Every year Christmas gets better with little grand children who are now old enough to look forward to excitement of the holidays...not to mention Grandma and David who look forward to their coming. We know how hard it is to pack up the kids and come all the way to Utah. Amy and Brian come from Washington DC. Travis and Sara come from NYC and Sally and Willie come from Colorado. Liz and Kelley come from St. Anthony ID and Greg and Jamie come from Sandy. We know they all can't come all of the time but when they do it is so appreciated and fun. Calder and Starr live near us in Midway but this year they spent the holiday in warm Mexico. Greg and Jamie opted for the CA beach.

Life can bring wonderful unexpected surprises. This last week was one of those as I gathered with three friends (as a result of Facebook) to catch up on 48 years. The experience was truly enriching and full of wonder as we told our life stories and shared the ups and downs of our years apart. Each of us could sense a feeling of having been directed and blessed through the journeys we related. We live in different places, have taken different directions, but still have the bond that brought us together so many years ago at Berkeley High School Class of 1962.

We were all members of social units (like sororities). In the context of the 60's in Berkeley there was some skepticism regarding almost everything. We decided there was a certain amount of exclusivity and pompousness in these groups that we were a little stuffy so we started our own "exclusive" tongue and cheek "Cuties" club. We had our own initiation and meetings. Although we continued our involvement with the larger groups we enjoyed our own get-togethers and bonding. After high school we all went separate ways as I eventually moved to Utah and the other girls attended different colleges.

I met Pam in an English class. She was always dressed so cute in her Lanz dresses and Capezio shoes. In high school my father was a graduate student at UC Berkeley while my mother taught school. We were quite poor and lived in the "flats" of Berkeley which was a definite social disadvantage but Pam reached out to me and we were eventually asked to join the Spartan social unit where we became fast friends. She was the first to marry of all of us and spent years living off the land in Montana. She and her family eventually made it back to the Bay Area where she worked and lived until their move six years ago to Washington State. She is still gracious and friendly and gave us some good cooking tips and a wonderful meal one night of our stay. She and her husband have raised a beautiful family and she is now probably one of the best grandmas ever.
I was very short and didn't have the nicest clothes but I started work at 14 at the Berkeley Daily Gazette as a copy/file clerk girl. I remember saving my money to buy one or two special pieces of clothing. My mother taught school next to a Goodwill store in Oakland so the ladies there got to know her and would save any "Lanz" dress that came in or special things in my size. I would buy Capezio shoes to go with the used clothing so I looked more presentable. I remember some really cute corduroy Bermuda shorts that I bought for $2.50 at Hinks. This photo was taken soon after graduation to send to one of my "special" missionaries.
Nancy lived "up on the hill" in a beautiful home. She was so sweet and fun. She was in many of the school plays and was interested in drama. Her mother was also a fun person who entertained us when we would come to visit. Nancy presented us with special cuties rings (pictured below) that her mother made for us. She so generously had us stay in her home on Balboa Island and entertained us graciously just as her mother did. We met her stunning daughter Lindsay who reminded me of "Greta Garbo" with her beautiful complexion and fabulous eyes.

Trudy grew up the street from Nancy. They attended elementary school together and have continued their friendship through the years. I knew Trudy from Garfield Jr. High then again at Berkeley High. I always thought she was such an unpretentious and kind person. Being with her again only reinforced that feeling. She has started her own archaeological research company and lives happily with her husband and family in Redding CA.

We talked and talked and talked, walked, reminisced, looked through our yearbook, laughed a lot, ate great food...and went for a picnic and a movie.

An important Balboa passage is eating at Ruby's on the Pier.

Nancy treated us all to a luxury pedicure which included flavored drinks, foot massages with our choice of aroma therapy. It was relaxing and fun. The results are pictured below.

I am reminded of a quote by Count Leo Tolstoy from his book Resurrection. "And his mind passed through those phases in which a face which we have not seen for many years first strikes us with the outward changes brought about during the time of separation, and then gradually becomes more and more like its old self when the changes made by time seem to disappear, and before our spiritual eyes rises only the principal expression of one exceptional, unique individuality."

For myself our time together only reinforced the knowledge that relationships are our most valuable eternal possession that goes with us and give us joy beyond the veil. The 48 years melted away as soon as we saw each other again. Thanks to everyone for such a wonderful experience.

Family

For the first time in two years all the Stratford siblings gathered in Midway with their children. They gathered at Amy and Brian's condo where all 17 took care of naps, meals, dirty diapers, tantrums, nights up with babies and general chaos. Grandma and David got to have the grandchildren over to play at their house sometimes one or two at a time and sometimes the whole group gathered there. It was so wonderful to see the growth and development of each family. We loved seeing them play and enjoy each other's company and to strenghten the bonds of family love.

Ella and Vera came and we spent time making beautiful ladies from Hollyhocks and other flowers. As we did so I was able to talk about what it was like when I was a little girl their ages.

Scout and Calder's favorite activity was playing in the pond. At her suggestion I bought a shark and floating chair to go along with the alligator.
Calder is a kind sweet boy who took time to watch and play with the younger children.
We had a fun evening at a local park. Stella had a good time with her watermelon rind with David looking on.
Crosby and Vera had a good time watching their favorite show, Dora.
The alligator went on a trip to The Homestead pool.
I loved seeing everyone in the pool having a good time.

The final count was impressive. Both Calder and Scout provided us with a good Sunday meal.

I took Ella and Vera on a nature walk but as Ella looked ahead at the darkness she decided it would be safer to not go in there because there might be bears.
We went hiking up Snake Creek Canyon. Crosby had such a good time throwing rocks into the water as we passed.

Wyatt and Hank are meeting their little cousin George for the first time. They loved being with the babies.
A special dinner just the adults at the Snake Creek Grill. Starr had arranged for babysitters to come. While we were having a night out the cousins got to stay up..have snacks and have a cousin party. When we got home they were having a wonderful time and the house was orderly and put together..an amazing feat for the babysitters.
David worked hard at the office each day taking care of a lot my duties so I could spend time with the kids. They are always happy when he joins in. He truly is "the baby whisperer."
I walked in one evening to find at least 6 Mac computers on the table. This was part of the "togetherness" as they were on separate sites with occasional comments to each other.
Scout was a good "big cousin" to the younger ones.
This was the first time any of the children had been in Midway for Swiss Days..which is a MAJOR event. For two days the population of our little town swells to about 100,000 people. Some of the locals leave town to miss all the hub bub. Scout decided it was her very most favorite thing and asked her parents to allow her to bring some friends out from NYC for a sweet sixteen party (when she gets to that age.)

Scout was a tireless worker as she peddled Halloween decorations at the booth from a store that I own part of.
The main event was the baptism of Calder and the blessing of baby George. I had worked tirelessly preparing the pond for this event. My pond is fed by warm springs and in one area it is fairly deep. It was a beautiful event..so special as his father performed this sacred ordinance with the whole family present.

I love George's name because that was my father's name. Brian's grandfather was also named George. He is a miracle and so welcomed and loved.

Here is how the family has grown in two years. Greg (David's son) came with Emma, Jamie and new baby Weston to support and share this great day. It is so worth any effort it takes to be together..to love and share the happy days . We have such wonderful memories of our time together. As Grandma Stratford would say, "This day will never come again."

Happy Birthday Amy

Since Amy has anything she wants it is hard to know what to do for her on her birthday..especially this landmark 40th year. I think of the song, "Row, row,row your boat gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily life is but a dream." It seems like looking back my life has been a dream since it seems like only yesterday that I had her in my arms as an infant. She is a cherished and important part of my life..making life sweet when it was sometimes challenging. I know people who meet her and say she has a special light about her. She has been an example to me in many ways. She is the glue that holds us together and just as she did as a child, watches over and cares for her siblings. There is so much I could say but I'll let a few photos of her life tell part of the history.

This is Amy's blessing day. I am stuffing her with rice cereal with an "Infa-Feeder". I'm hoping any problems she now has didn't come from this method of feeding.

Amy was an easy baby..so happy and sweet. Being the first born, I'm sure is a challenge since she is the "practice child". We learned as we went along with the others but she was from the start the mother sibling as her brothers and sister came into our home. She watched over each one and helped me in so many ways.

Amy and Sally have always had a special relationship. If ever Sally was sad or in trouble she went to Amy for comfort. They continue that bond as they talk on the phone or email almost every day.

The long awaited..GREAT DAY! Amy waited for the best possible husband ever with Brian Barker. He is kind and loving and has served her well during the years of childbearing which has been a sacrifice for both of them with her illnesses and complications. Her goal was to have her children before she turned 40 and she accomplished this with one week to spare...Hooray for Amy and Brian as they brought forth little George Stratford Barker to join with Ella Jane and Vera Elizabeth.

A radiant, beautiful mother. Happy birthday Amy. You are a blessing to all who know you. I love you so much and feel so privileged to be your mother.

Happy Days in Colorado

I just returned from my second annual outing with Wyatt and Hank. This is the second year Sally has taken the young women (about 14 girls) on a backpacking trip to the Sawtooth Mountains and has asked me to be with the boys while she is away. I was greeted by a room full of flowers as only Sally can provide.
I have my own private antique filled space in the lower level of their home.

The days usually began with Wyatt and Hank greeting their friends from next door. It is such a pleasant neighborhood with nice people who have fun and watch out for each other. The two next door boys are the same age so they play with gusto and share each other's toys. There used to be a fence dividing the properties which has recently come down to make it easier to go back and forth.

Wyatt asked me to draw a target and make him an arrow so he could work at practice with his homemade bow.

Ginny gave me a rest by taking all the boys to the park.
We went to the city pool and Wyatt said he thought he would like a snorkle. He was so kind and helpful the whole time I was there that I was happy to get one for him.
What more would a grandma want than two boys who run up and want to have snuggle time.
Wyatt was impressive as he practiced his Karate and listened so well to instruction.
Wyatt is Hank's protector and friend.

Wyatt and Hank are very musical as you might imagine. Every night before they go to bed they choose a song to sing and sometimes during the day they like to sing as well.
Sally is a photographer extraordinaire. She can even me look good.
I'll treasure the sweet photos she took of me and the boys.

We had lots of fun. Maybe she'll go camping again next year.

Remembering Grandpa

During these last two years four of my remaining aunts and uncle have passed away. As Memorial Day approached this year I realized that I am now of the "older" generation. It is my place now to acquaint the younger generations with their ancestors they never knew.

Grandpa was born of pioneer ancestory. His mother passed away while he was a teen. He worked along side of his father in the cattle business and did much to support his older brothers and sisters financially as they became doctors, mission presidents. He is the first one on the back row.

Utah has a unique celebration for Memorial Day. As Mormons, we revere our ancestors and take the opportunity to show respect and love for them on this special day. Since my mother was born in Heber City from McDonald ancestors who settled the area, the cemetary is the place of rest for her, my father, and all of her siblings but one. This brings about a great gathering of cousins who come long distances to visit their parent's graves. The cemetary is a place to behold..laden with flowers and binding memories. My cousin Larry plays the bagpipes at three places..honoring each generation. I would say he is the "rock star" of Memorial Day because people plan their visit to hear him as the nostalgic sounds waft through the trees and gravesites. As we walked from place to place we passed many gathered families and heard them telling stories as they shared family history in writing and spoken word. I took the time today to tell about my grandfather Andrew McDonald. He is the only grandparent I knew since all the others had passed away by the time I was born.
This is a photo of my grandfather shortly after he married my grandmother. He reminds me a little of Gary Cooper the actor since he was tall and lanky. He was the silent type but had a very wry sense of humor and would come out with zingers every once in awhile. He died at 85 when I was ten years old. It was my first experience with death and had quite an affect on me. He had been a big part of my life. He would come to our home almost every day to give my mother physical therapy since she had been crippled as a child. I enjoyed his humor and kindness and grieved at his passing. I remember sitting at his home as friends and family came to give respect and comfort to the family. As each person viewed his body they would tell a story that would bring laughter. One night several weeks after his passing I had a vivid dream of him sitting at the end of my bed. I remember feeling love and comfort from him which allowed me to let go of the sadness I had been feeling.
My mother was the only girl of five children. Grandpa was so proud of his children and provided them with every opportunity. He was a properous and well respected cattleman. He became a cattle broker for the Wrigley family of California and shipped an annual cattle train to Los Angeles. I remember going to help him hay with my father. I of course only knew him after his active business life but found him to be a hard worker into his 80's.
This photos shows him with my older cousins. It was taken on Memorial Day 1942. He loved his family and his grandchildren. I consider him to be one of my closest and most beloved relatives.

A Happy NYC Birthday

Scout and I have birthdays two days apart. I decided this year the thing that would make me the happiest would be to share my birthday with her. This was a landmark year of 10 years old for her. It seemed hardly possible. They live close to the school so we were able to walk her and Calder each morning. It was beautiful spring weather and such fun to walk them and see where they go to school.
This was the first time we had seen Travis and Sara's new home. I love everything about it. I think I've always dreamed about living in a home just like theirs.

We call David "the baby whisperer" because babies and children gravitate to him. Crosby was no exception.
Scout stopped eating her ice cream long enough for a photo in front of the blossoms.
We went to see Calder at his swimming lessons.

We went to back to school night. Their school is like a mini Ivy League college...so traditional and beautiful. The neighborhood that they live in was developed in the 20's. There us a great deal of diversity and pride.
Calder is quite an artist. He is sitting in front of one of his paintings. I should probably snag some of his work before he becomes famous and expensive.
We are in Calder's room looking at the project I had prepared called "Flat Stanley". Flat Stanley came in the mail to Midway. We were asked to take him around the city and give him a tour of where we lived. I placed Stanley at various places in Midway then told about them. I was gratified when his teacher met us in person and told us we got an excellent grade for the project.
Scout is a very gifted writer. She read us the stories and poetry she had written.
For her birthday her mother made the best cupcakes ever to be seen at their school.
For my birthday David and I met Travis at his office in Soho and we had a birthday lunch with his partners and employees.
Travis took us to some of his favorite places. This is his favorite graffiti/art wall.
This is the Breton Way street he lives on. He is at the end of a cul-de-sac. The home next to him at the end was built and lived in by the gangster Bugsy Segil.
It is a great place for Calder to learn skate boarding tricks with his dad.

On Saturday Travis, Scout, David and I went to Manhattan for a day of adventure. This is the trail to the train that Travis walks on every day. It is a beautiful nature walk to and from home.
It was a little chilly when we got to the pier. We went to an exhibit on the body at a museum.
We visited Ground Zero. This is the church yard that was just a block from the twin towers that miraculously escaped damage.

A bunch of friends came for dinner and had a great time with computer games.
The next day Scout wasn't feeling well so she stayed home and enjoyed reading her new books.
David and I walked down to the village..seeing one of our offices in the nicest building in town.

This is the all white "celestial room" much like Travis' Aunt Marilyn had. We loved staying there and felt so special. Being with family is the best birthday I could have had.

The Wedding Dress

The way I foster closeness with the grand daughters is to provide a costume/princess room where they can be creative and dress up as their imagination warrants. I am always looking for new ways to add to the collection. When I know they are coming it is always fun for them to anticipate a new gown or accessory. A few months ago I picked up an antique 50's Audrey Hepburn 3/4 sleeve Chantilly lace wedding gown at the thrift store. I threw it in the washer and it came out beautifully. When I finally got around to making it over to fit a four or five year old, I noticed the label "Cahill of Beverly Hills". When I googled the name I realized I had a very valuable and sought after gown. There is a whole industry of vintage clothing I knew nothing about. After thinking for awhile I decided the grand daughters were more important than the $$ I could get from selling it on EBay. The following photos show the enjoyment we have gotten from such a find. Three little girls and a good sport boy cousin have modeled and enjoyed the new gown.

Emma, as usual, was a natural at posing and made a beautiful dark haired bride.
It is fun to see them walk around with the train like a true princess.
Ella is usually fairly reserved but she asked to make a special trip to my house so we could do the costumes together.
She is sweet with her bob haircut. She is enjoying my make-up drawer.

Wyatt got into the act taking the part of the groom.
They are "best" cousins and enjoy playing together. The dress has indeed been worth the $4.00 I paid.

Moving Into Spring

Still Having Fun

The road trip to St. Anthony Idaho is fun enough but when we get there we are always treated to lots of fun with Liz, Kelly and family. We drove up to celebrate Anna's fifth birthday. We snowmobiled, bowled, sang happy birthday, ate cake, went out to dinner and watched the Olympics.

Liz and the children came for a visit and we took a tour of the ice castles up the street from our home. We live in an area of hot springs so in the winter the water is sprayed to make these beautiful formations.
My weekly day with Stella gives me the ability to enjoy her growth and development. She loves to stand and pull herself up. She is making lots of "talking" sounds and is especially interested in reading books with me.

When Hank and Wyatt come to visit they have a new take on the Princess room. They use the crowns in an entirely different way than the girls do.
David took Wyatt for his first ski lesson. He did great and wants to go again.
Wyatt can't help but be musical since his parents are in a band and his dad plays fiddle. You can see by the photo how intent he is to learn and do well.
Again, they are enjoying the lap of luxury at Amy and Brian's condo.

I love it when I come out of the front door and see the fog rising from the pond. Each day it looks different.
A local artist painted our garage last week.
Tomorrow Stella comes again. Life is exciting and fun.

Catching Up

This was Stella's first Christmas and she got special treatment from Santa. Since it has been so long since I've blogged, I am going to take a backward look at the last two months. It has been a joyous time with family. There is so much for us to be thankful for.

Ella went ice skating, skiing, swimming and hiking while she was here.

The Rest of the Trip

While not neccesarily in order here are 1/10 of the photos we took. This one is where we went to a really wonderful Vivaldi concert in Venice.
The whole purpose of the trip was to take a gondola ride with someone I really loved. Even though riding the gondola cost an arm and a leg..it was a dream realized.

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. We made a quick trip through since David isn't as much a shopper as Amy and Sally and I. The girls and I spent hours in there.

One of the best parts of the trip was sitting around reading and relaxing.
Dubovnik, Coatia. We thought it was wonderful and charming. We'd like to go back there someday.

Our huge cabin on the boat. We had a wonderful time and are so glad we went. Amy gave us a piggy bank with an Italian flag on it and started a trip fund for us to motivate us to go. Calder arranged the flights which went off without a hitch. Greg drove us to the airport and left our car there when we got home. Thanks to everyone for encouraging us to go.

Venice

Happy to be in Venice. I'd send more photos but now that we are on the cruise ship we are finding they are making up for the low fare by charging extra for every possible thing. We even had to buy a "water package" for $25 as well as a "Coca Cola" package for $35". We are of course paying through the nose for internet access..all of which 'annoys me no end..so you'll get the full scoop and photos when we get home. We're having a wonderful time.

I did include 4 photos but the poor internet access just deleted them all.

Paris Day 2

Leaving for the bus. We've had perfect "just right" weather to sit on the top and enjoy the beauty of the city.

We went to the market.

Then the Eiffel Tower. Only one side was open..too long of a line so we opted for walking and pictures from the bottom.
The market was one of the highlights of the day. David know how I like "just looking."
Back to Notre Dame and the surrounding quaint neighborhood.

This evening we went to Pont Alexandre III Bridge. Beautiful Sunset..very romantic.

Paris Day 1

We're actually here and having such a good time. We made the plane by the skin of our teeth in Salt Lake and were so thankful to hear our names called. THANK YOU CALDER!! I read half of the new Dan Brown novel on the plane so didn't get much sleep. We had great seats with an empty seat between us. We took a nap as soon as we got to our very trendy (lots of people look like Travis and Enoch..skinny pants). We are in the more trendy part of town (lots of modern design) just a block away from the Arc de Triomphe. We took a double decker tour bus that let us off at different places..a good way to see things. Tonight we walked around the streets and are now ready to turn in. We have "The Little Black Book of Paris" that Amy sent us and will plan out our day tomorrow. We love you all.
This might take the place of a trip to the Louvre..with only one day..and since I've already been there we might take the time to see some other things.

I've had wonderful walking partners over the years and I know the visits and vistas to start the day have saved me from many an emotional pitfall. I live in such a beautiful, peaceful, quiet place that soothes my soul and provides healing and gratitude. Come, take a walk with me and see what I see.

Stella's First Fourth

Stella's First Fourth of July all dressed up. The fireworks were good but looking at her was better. We had such a fun week-end with Sally, Willie, Wyatt, Hank, Calder, Starr, Stella, David and me.
We went cruising in the Mini to the ice cream store. Sally spent time at the quilting store I own part of. Willie enjoyed the music played on Main Street and the book store. I went to the Plen Aire art exhibit. David worked in the garden. We went to a quilt exhibit. We ate and visited and enjoyed the beautiful day.

The evening was cool and magical.
Wyatt stayed up way past his bed time. He is so joyful about little things. He jumped up and down and said how much fun he was having..living in the moment.

At the end of the day I asked him if he knew why we celebrated the 4th of July. He really didn't know so after I explained it was in celebration of the birthday of our country and how wonderful it is that we live in freedom and plenty, he said "We are so blessed." I say "Amen to that."

I had the wonderful opportunity to babysit Sally and Willie's two boys this last week while Sally took a group of young women on a three day hike and camping. Luckily with the free air travel I get with Calder being a pilot, the trip from Salt Lake to Grand Junction, CO is a piece of cake.
Wyatt and Hank really enjoyed having a bath outside. I put hot water in the tub then dragged it outside and cooled it with the hose. It was a treat for us all. Such joy from simple things.

The last time I visited we celebrated the big potty training bench mark at Chuck E Cheese. Willie took us there again. Wyatt was so cute as he thanked his dad over and over again for taking him. Even little Hank is good at saying "thank you" for every little thing that is done for him.
I brought Wyatt a 3/4 size violin I had as a child. He was so excited to have one like his dad. (who plays the fiddle)
Hank could hold out two fingers and say, "Peace".

I thought they would get lonely for Sally but we had such a good time there wasn't a moment of wistful homesickness for her..but when she finally did come home they were very happy. Hank tries to do everything that Wyatt does. He wears Wyatt's underpants over his diaper. An added creation is wearing one for a hat.

Back home in Midway were the Princess grand daughters wearing the latest creations from Grandma. Dress up is always a hit.
Liz and Kelly came with their girls from St. Anthony ID. They always work hard and help when they come. Kelly trimmed and cut down trees and mowed the lawn. Liz planted our garden for us.
Megan is a very enthusiatic horse rider. Her big sister, Anna has a real horse she is learning to ride.

A nice ending for the week was coming across the bridge and finding the baby ducks I've been waiting for..soon there will be a baby grandchild to write about (due in about ten days.)

Something wonderful is about to take place in Midway, Utah. Starr and Calder and grandma are waiting for their first born child, a little girl named ?.

The celebration and anticipation is great as family and friends gather to express their love and happiness for them.

Starr's family is the best for parties and gatherings. They always come in mass with great food and humor. This shower was at her grandmother's home in Provo.
I am very excited to have a baby grandchild living down the street from me since all the other 10 grandchildren live far away. I will even babysit and hold her when she cries in the night.
Starr's mother and grandmother create an ambiance with flowers, food, and fun...such classy ladies.

Mom's El Capitan Experience

When Calder was 17 years old he announced he was going to spend the summer living in the Yosemite parking lot in his pimped out VW bus. As a parent the prospect of danger was many fold the least of which was the peril of his climbing activities. Nothing would dissuade Calder from his desire and so with trust in his goodness and judgement he was sent on his way. He called me weekly to report and tell me about his adventures. This was the beginning of many years of big wall climbing and the resulting physical and emotional growth that it brought to him. He became very accomplished and well known for his skills and proved to be a credit to his family.

His older brother Travis, who is an established business owner and father of three, decided recently that he would like to experience the thrill of climbing. He arranged for Calder to take him along with his best friend and business partner, Enoch Palmer, to Yosemite to climb El Capitan. Calder invited another climbing friend, Nate Brown, to join them. The photo above is the farewell photo the morning they started on their way.
This is a photo in the meadow before their ascent. This trip had new and wonderful ways to keep me in the loop. With the age of the iphone, facebook, internet and techie geek Travis, there were daily updates and photos reporting their progress and feelings.

Six days of this does not seem fun to me but they had a wonderful time. They said the days flew by as they busied themselves with the process of placing and cleaning their gear and climbing.
Before they started up the bears got hold of their water supply.
Sleeping at night would freak me out but they were tied onto the rock and assured me it was all safe.

At the top. A great feeling of accomplishment for the climbers and great feeling of relief to me to know they would be on their way home.
Back in Midway cleaning the gear. (the sailboat in the barn will probably be the next great adventure.) I told Travis and Calder how much I loved them but more than that I'm thankful they love and enjoy each other so much. I think this trip deepened all of those feelings. Glad they went..glad they came home safe.

Spring is Coming

We've been having intermittent snow and rain but we know we're on our way to Spring.
Today was nippy/warm and we went to the plant store and bought hanging plants..such an exciting time of the year.
I worked in the pond and David mowed the lawn. It is my favorite time of the year when the grass is so green and the baby leaves come out.

Shades of Katrina

We've been thinking more of the victims of Katrina as we've sorted through our water soaked clothing and furniture. We think of the small loss and difficulty we are experiencing compared to theirs. The first few days after we got home were sunny and dry so we spread a lot of the wet things out on our deck and they actually dried out.
The fancy jet toilet apparently built up too much pressure for some reason and blew apart. When we came home water was running full blast with about two inches on the floor and a general flow into my closet (David's is the small one you see) and into the bedroom.
The worst of the damage was to shoes on the floor and tops that had sleeves touching the ground. Of course the carpets and curtains were soaked and smelly. David called the Utah Disaster Repair and we (they..since I fell asleep on the couch around 1PM) spent most of the night vacuuming the water and setting up the fans.
It is a challenge to get ready for work each day since we have to search through bags and baskets and piles to find something to wear. The fans were removed after a week and we think next week we'll start to see some repair begin. It is a long process but gratefully the insurance will be paying except for the deductible.
The other blessing is we have a home away from home at our condo. We go there at the end of the day just to sleep and get ready for the next day. It is like a vacation each night as we pack our bag and get into the car and drive the block away. It is clean, simple, smells good and beautiful. (for sale for a really good price.)

Springtime in Washington DC

We had such a happy trip to see Amy, Brian and their family. We played in the yard, played tag, ball and pushed the girls on the swing. Vera wanted to do everything Ella did.
We received a happy greeting from Ella and Vera as they show us their prowess of jumping and sliding on the chair.
Brian and Amy took us to their favorite French restaurant. It is my second time there and it really is fabulous. They are always such gracious and generous hosts. It is a "Five Star" experience.
Such a nice evening.

We visited Arlington Cemetary. It was a beautiful day. The blossoming trees and gardens were a wonderful departure from Utah snow.
Part of the timing of our visit was to join Amy and Brian at the BYU Management Society, Washington chapter annual dinner. The speaker was Elder Henry B Eyring. Brian was privileged to be the escort for the Eyrings during their visit. We packed very fancy lunches for their hotel room and Ella helped. She is very good at singing and making up lyrics as she goes. She was singing a lovely song and we commented to her how beautiful it was to make a song about Baby Jesus. She informed us the song was about the "baby cheeses" we were putting in the lunches.
Amy and Brian are great parents.
Ella gave a talk for sharing time.
Ganet is such a big help. She tends, cleans and cooks. She works hard all day long. She is a kind, gentle person.
We rode bikes on the church parking lot behind their house.
We toured the sites of Washington DC.

We went with Amy when she ran a 5K. The event ended up being a mostly singles event and Amy said she was probably the only one whose mother was there pinning on their numbers.

Happy Birthday David

Today is David Thayne Bellessa's 60th birthday. It started out with breakfast in bed, a phone call from Howard and Calder, a dusting of snow and a trip to the office. We'll see how the rest of the day goes.

David's two favorite things to do: skiing and golfing. There is nothing better than doing those things with his family.

I make reference to my Valentine's posting as to how I feel about him. I'd like to let him know your greetings to him on his birthday. The best part of his day would be hearing from you.

Hitting the Slopes

I haven't been skiing much this year but I've had a chance to go with the Special Ed students to The Ability Center at Park City Resort. It is a wonderful place that is such a blessing to each of these children. They offer horseback riding, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding in the winter. They have special equipment and instructors many who have overcome physical handicaps themselves who work with the children. It is very inspiring to observe paralyzed, one legged, deaf, blind, or mentally challenged people who have worked to overcome their limitations. I admire the participants as well as the instructors.

This is Madison going out with her instructor. It is always a fun thing to tell the other students when we get back what a great skier she is. She gets very little positive attention as she struggles to do her schoolwork in her regular classes.
This was the Tate's reaction after getting all geared up and on the snow. He loves the days we go skiing. The instructors do such a good job and it gives the kids a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
After I took photos of Tate he wanted to take a photo of me.
Here I am on a perfect Blue Bird day..blue sky and just right snow. When I get there I always enjoy the beautiful surroundings and company. I know how happy it makes David when I go with him. I mostly ski alone since he is the master of the hill and I feel intimidated when he zooms down the hill and waits while I catch up. I'm proud that I've learned to ski at all and I'm better than I thought I would be. David is taking the time to teach the Bellessa grand daughters to ski and I look forward going down the greens with them.

A Happy Family

I'm so thankful to Calder for flight privileges that allow me to get to Sally and Willie's for visits. I love spending time with them and their children. I'm thankful to David for taking care of our business while I'm away. The first order of activity was watching "Madagascar Two" with Wyatt.

Sally is a sweet and patient mother. Poor little Hank had a bad ear infection and only wanted his Mama.
Favorite activities with Daddy are reading, playing music and listening to stories. The boys love spending special time with Willie. He is a kind and loving father.
This is the sweetest, kindest boy ever who is such an example of not only reverence but joy of life. I'm so thankful to be his grandmother. He sent me home with a flower to remind me of him and a beautifully composed letter for David.

A Good Memory

The pride and joy of Travis' senior year was a very cool 1957 Pontiac. He drove it around most of the year with an old Christmas tree tied to the top. We would brainstorm from time to time about how we could up the unique factor so he would be the toast of Helaman Halls his freshman year at BYU.
We had sold our home to Elvis' ex-wife, Priscilla Presley and on the day of the closing we got word the funding from Graceland would be a day late. Knowing we owned the home for another day spawned the brilliant idea of putting the Pontiac, lovingly named "the Stealth" in the garage to bring about the transformation. We gathered paints and brushes and called together friends and had a "paint happening". We each took a place and started creating. Luckily we had Pat Scullin (now a professional artist) in the mix. I'm trying to remember everyone who was there. I know Morgan and Melynne Murdock, Enoch Palmer, Chad Cerwin, Sally and Calder were there. It was one of the most fun days I can remember. It took us the good part of the day and we got so involved we didn't think of food until Mimi Murdock showed up with a pizza and pop which was such fun surprise. When we drove it out in the evening it was better than we thought it could be.
One side is very sixties with the flames, aliens, peace symbol, and psychodelic design.

The front has the CTR symbol and Captain America with happy faces. It at one time had a "Bob's Big Boy" hood ornament until someone stole it. There sure were lots of happy date nights loaded with friends cruising University Avenue in the coolest car ever to come to BYU. It served well until Travis left on his mission and some other kid took it over. It really should be in an art museum honoring creativity but is probably rusting away in some junk yard...but the memories are bright and new.

My Valentine

My Valentine, David Thayne Bellessa.
The story: Soon after I moved to Midway some mutual friends told me their best friend had recently lost his wife and they thought we would be a great couple. They continued to mention him over the next three years with little interest on either of our parts. On the Fourth of July 2003 Tom Whitaker (the matchmaker) met me at the town breakfast and asked if David had ever called me. Apparently some major pressure was put into place. When I got home that evening there was a call saying he promised Tom he would call. Our first date was the next night to the Oakley Rodeo..with fireworks. It seemed we were both ready, the timing was right and we knew right away things were good. Our 5 1/2 years together have been such a blessing to me. He is kind, easy going, witty and emotionally and spiritually strong...and handsome.

Our annual "Warren Miller" anniversary night out. I was such a good sport to learn to ski and hit the slopes weekly for the first few years of our marriage. This year we attended the movie together as usual but I now mostly stay home and clean and do errands on the ski days. I might go on a sunny, just perfect snow day.

Reporting The Week

Winter is still here and beautiful. Here are a few more shots taken on my way to work.

Teaching this week was a stretch for me. I taught elementary PE and Junior High Math. I was pretty nervous about the Jr. High but for the most part the students were respectful and willing to follow instructions. I am teaching Special Ed all of next week.

Summer Bellessa and her mother visited on Wednesday. She gave a wonderful talk to the Young Women of the Midway Stake about choices, values and modesty. I've heard so much appreciation and positive reaction from the mothers and girls. We were truly blessed and as an added bonus I found out her mother was an expert on insurance and medicare. She got me on the computer and found all the best plans and set me up..what a relief.

This is Eliza Magazine. It has wonderful fashion ideas, is beautiful and classy. Summer does a great job. The photo shoots are beautiful and the articles are interesting. Special note to Sally..look who is on the front cover.

Most of the mornings this last week have had frozen fog clinging to the trees. It is hard to capture the sparkle of the sun gleaming diamond like...such a beautiful way to start the day.

This is my route to Old Mill Elementary to substitute in the Special Ed class. It has been years since I've been in the classroom albeit I teach the ten year olds in Primary. I had a delightful experience..and like riding a bike it seemed like I'd hardly been away. The children were challenging but sweet. There was an aid for each child (about six) so they were never left alone. They spent most of the day in their regular classrooms along with their aids. Part of the day they would come in with me. I got lots of hugs when I left today. A nice way to augment the slow real estate market.

Seth was a good friend. He loved playing with the "kitchen" and spent a lot of time feeding me plastic food.

Tate is sweet and happy. He has cousins at the school who are caring and protective of him. He eats lunch with the kids from his "mainstream" classroom and they are kind and sweet with him.

This is Kayaah. She watches out for and helps the other children. She makes sure the room is orderly with chairs under the table and toys put away. She has beautiful flowing hair and a loving personality.

Snow Bunnie Anna skied for two days with expert instruction from her Grandpa. She exclaimed at the end of the first day that she was the greatest skier ever! She loved skiing with her cousin Emma and helped her get used to getting her jacket off and on when they stopped for hot chocolate.

Snow Bunnie Emma on her first day on the slopes looked stunning with her pink gloves, matching pink flowered helmet and ruffled coat. She and Grandpa shouted down from the ski lift to ask "Hey, don't it make you feel good?"

Liz, Kelly, Megan, Anna, along with Liz' best friend Stacey and her daughters, were fun visitors. Jamie and Emma joined us for dinner. Liz and Kelly brought a freshly butchered ham that we ate with Idaho potatoes fresh from the fields. Stacey made some very yummy brownies and left us with a specially prepared hot chocolate mix.

Wyatt is enthusiastic about everything in life. He is excited about pre-school, Primary, music and playing with his friends and brother. He loves his mom and dad and is obedient and kind to his little brother, Hank.

This might be the reason for Crosby to get involved with the Stratford Star Wars obsession.

Little Crosby just had tubes put into his ears. He is lively and excited about life. He loves Dora and no doubt will get into Star Wars soon.

A Place of Peace and Safety

About twelve years ago I was blessed to find a home in Midway that provided a haven of peace and healing. It is surrounded by ever changing beautiful nature and wildlife. The view from every window is wondrous. I share it now with my husband, David and each day we give thanks for our life together and the beauty that surrounds us.

Princesses

There are beautiful princesses who visit our home. They go upstairs and choose their gowns and take the royal stroll through the house. Princess Emma usually wants to ride the horse. Anna is very creative with the ensembles she creates. Everyone's favorite color is pink. They love the jewels and high heels. Ella enjoyed having a crown for her royal head. David and I feel privileged to have such beautiful, regal people visit us.

Christmas Decorations

I'm known to go a little overboard with my Christmas decorations. The tree is the main element and I've had a long tradition loading it down with so many ornaments that the tree is not visible. I kind of go into a "decorating zone" right after Thanksgiving. It is a time of remembrance and solitude. As I place each ornament (or string of glass balls) memories flood back. I usually put on Christmas music and conference talks.
David proves his good humor and love for me each year as he pulls down the multitude of boxes from the garage storage and kindly puts on the lights..the part I like the least. Our first Christmas together the tree fell over with a bang so we have since found a way to wire it to the ceiling to avoid such tragedy.
I remember the first Christmas I lived in Midway by myself the ward asked me to be part of a home tour. I had been feeling quite lost and lacking in enthusiasm but the request put me back to the old place of "the zone" and I've had it ever since.

Everyone just left after a week of fun with kids and grandkids. We walked in the snow, played in the snow, shoveled the snow, sat by the fire, opened presents, ate good meals, watched movies, ate out, went to church, reminisced, laughed, took photos, changed diapers, put on princess costumes, opened Christmas cards, thought about old friends, played games, skied, shopped, admired out Christmas lights, opened presents and cooked together. The best word..'together'.

We love seeing our children be such good parents and being married to such good people. Our grandchildren are beautiful and smart. Happy times!
